Lyon turns Test back Australia’s way

Lion

Australia are in driver’s seat in fourth straight Test match over England, after a strong display with ball on day three today, with the hosts requiring just 201 runs in the final innings with all 10 wickets in bag.

Australia’s hero on day 3 was Nathan Lyon who took five wickets, as Australia bundled out England for 179 in their second innings. Though it must be said Lyon was hleped on his way for a five-fer by England’s batsman.

Australia chasing 231 for a 4-0 lead, started brightly with Chris Rogers and David Warner scoring 18 and 12 respectively, as Australia moved to 30 for no loss at stumps.

Earlier in the day, England started their second innings decently, but suffered collapses of three for one and then five for six either side of the tea break to surrender their advantage, and give Australia a chance to take control of the match which to the hosts credit they took it with both hands.

Mitchell Johnson was in action again with a run out and a vital catch, as England stumbled in second session from 86/1 to 115/4.

Alastair Cook scored 51 before being trapped lbw to Johnson’s reverse swing and soon after, England’s top order crumbled, losing three wickets in five balls. Michael Carberry was out lbw to Peter Siddle for 12. In the next over, Johnson ran out Joe Root with a direct-hit throw from mid-off, followed two balls later by Ian Bell’s dismissal for a duck, when he popped up a Nathan Lyon delivery to Johnson at mid-off.

Earlier, Cook had became the youngest cricketer to reach 8,000 Test runs, as the tourists moved to 54 without much fuss at lunch, after dismissing Australia for 204. The 29-year-old Cook beat Sachin Tendulkar to the milestone by 21 days and appeared in fine touch, as he reached the break on 41 at luch.

The opening stand extended England’s lead to 105 and made for a poor hour in the field for England, as they allowed Australia’s Brad Haddin and Nathan Lyon to add a valuable 40 runs for the final wicket.

After resuming on 164 for nine, the last wicket Aussie pair frustrated the England attack with a number of streaky boundaries, before paceman James Anderson struck to remove the Australia wicketkeeper for 65.

Lyon was 18 not out, after slogging three boundaries and providing commendable support to Haddin. Anderson finished the pick of England’s bowlers with 4/67. Fellow seamer Stuart Broad took  3/45.

Australia hold an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-test series. The final match starts in Sydney on January 3.
